Diamonds are usually the first choice for the engagement rings and jewellery in general for all of us. But sometimes, due to the higher prices of diamonds, people consider buying other precious gemstones over diamonds.

However, most people have the major question while buying gemstones other than diamonds, which is: Are there any intrinsic differences between both of them, apart from the price?

Well, let’s have a look at it:

Diamonds vs other Gemstones

‘Gemstone’ is the term used for any naturally-found crystals from the earth’s interior. Gemstones are normally used in ornaments and other adornments.

Considering the beauty, popularity, rarity, and worth of the gemstones, they are mainly divided into two distinct categories: Precious gemstones & Semi-precious gemstones.

At present, only 4 gemstones, Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire fall under the category of Precious Gemstones, while all other gemstones are considered Semi-precious Gemstones.

Among all other precious gemstones, diamonds are the most desired and expensive gem. Let’s look at what is about diamonds that give them the upper hand in the gems and jewellery industry.

Formation

The most significant difference between diamonds vs other gemstones is its formation and composition.

As stated, all the gemstones formed deep in the interior of earth from a single or a combination of multiple compounds or elements.

Diamonds are formed entirely from a single element, and it is highly pressurized carbon. All other gemstones are compounds of two or more elements.

Color

If we consider the aesthetics, diamonds are usually found near colorless or with a slight yellow tint, and other gemstones are generally found colored.

Most diamonds have clear aesthetics, sometimes due to interstitial impurities or structural defects, they are formed in different colors like black, blue, green, milky white, pink, red, yellow, etc.

Though all other gemstones are found naturally colored, they don’t have very rich color and have to undergo heat treatment to enhance the color.

The heat treatment gives gems the perfectly rich color, which is usually permanent. Some enhanced gemstones may fade slowly with time, which might not be readily noticeable, but they do.

Durability

Diamonds are the hardest known substance in the world. It marks a hardness of the highest – 10 on a Mohs scale, which makes it the hardest and durable material.

Very few gemstones have the hardness even closer to diamond. For example, ruby and sapphire are the next hardest gems after diamond with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.

Not only this, but diamonds also have a remarkably high melting point, which makes them highly durable gems. As they can withstand high temperatures, without damaging the internal structure.

Durability is the prime reason that makes diamonds more preferable over any other gemstones. As the softer and less durable gemstones are more prone to be scratched, chipped, and even cracked.

Even faceting lowers the hardness of the gemstone, meaning edges of the facets of any gemstones other than diamonds are most likely to become rounder over time.

Sparkle

Diamonds consist of dazzling optical properties like a prism when compared to any other gemstone.

One of the most alluring qualities of the diamond is its exquisite ability to capture and reflect the light in multiple directions and multiple times, which gives diamonds the lovely sparkle.

Cost

Diamonds have a considerable price difference with other gemstones. As there is a monopoly that exists in the market over the price of diamonds.

Sometimes even the artificial shortage of diamonds is created in the market to keep their prices high.

On the other hand, this type of price manipulation is prohibited in the case of all the other gemstones. Their prices follow the usual fluctuation according to the change in demand and supply.

Making the Choice…

Due to their high resilience and extreme durability, diamonds are often referred to as Forever. So, there is no denying that diamonds are rich in the symbolism of love and eternity in wedding/engagement jewellery.

In general, diamonds are timeless sparkles that never go out of fashion and versatile beauty that seamlessly match any skin tone.

If you want to wear beauty with luxury every day, then go for diamond jewellery. As all other gemstones are less durable, so they are suitable for the jewellery you wear occasionally.

On the other hand, if you want to wear a unique sparkle with color and a bigger stone for your money, then switching to other precious gemstones is the best option.

However, most of the people look forward to a lifetime investment in their precious stone/jewellery, and even pass it down to the next generation as heirloom pieces, for them, diamonds are the perfect gemstones.
