We think diamond accents are some of the lesser known elements of jewelry making and usually there are so many questions around it.

Are they real diamonds? Especially when accents are rarely certified, the buyer is confused whether the purchase was worth it or not.

Your key takeaways from this blog will be:

  • • What are diamond accents and where they are used.
  • • Practical tips to choose the right diamond accents for your jewelry.
  • • Types of accents and the best combinations for different diamond shapes.

What are Diamond Accents?

Diamond accents are small diamonds that weigh lesser than the center diamond and surround it to accentuate the beauty. They add extra sparkle and volume to the jewelry and make it look more expensive.

The main diamond is like the star of the show with the accents as the supporting team. It all comes together to make an amazing piece of art.

Where are diamond accents used?

You will rarely see diamond accents being sold separately to any jewelry buyer. They are low value diamonds used only to accentuate bigger diamonds.

Their small size and lower visibility make them less valuable individually; thus, they are only bought by jewelers and wholesalers.

Accents are not cut with the full number of facets, like in the case of normal-sized diamonds. Therefore diamond accents are available in rectangular, round, trapezoid, or triangular shapes.

For example, a round-shaped accent diamond is “single cut” with usually 16 to 18 facets when compared to bigger stones that are “full cut” with 58 facets.

How big are the diamond accents exactly?

It depends on the size and setting of the main stone. The size of diamond accents is based on the centerpiece it is meant to enhance.

In general  accents weigh something between 0.01 to 0.20 carats and even in the rarest of cases they don’t exceed the carat value of 0.25.

The size depends on what is best for the look of the jewelry piece that it is set in, otherwise it depends on the preference of the consumer if they are getting it custom-made.

Never fail at choosing the right diamond accents with these effective tips:

Balance is Key

Whether you are a jewelry buyer or wholesaler, the fundamental of choosing a diamond accent is knowing how to balance.

The accent should be big enough to look pretty and visible but at the same time should not be so big that it overpowers the center stone.

Remember diamond accents are here to elevate and not overshadow or spoil the look of your precious big diamond.

Pair different shapes

Jewelry making is art therefore you should not be afraid to take risks. It is not important to match the shape of the diamond to that of accents. Feel free to pair different shapes and see what looks best.

Match and Blend

If you want to take the classic and safe route, even that works! Don’t distract from the centerpiece and choose accents that match the shape, color, size and clarity of the main diamond.

This way, the diamond and the accents will blend together and give you a timeless look you can be sure will look good.

Focus on Colour and Clarity

Most accent diamonds are of low clarity SI or I grades which means they have more inclusions and it makes them cheaper.

However, these inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and do not compromise the sparkle, making them a priority pick for jewelers.

As for color, accent diamonds are not completely colorless(If you find one, keep it. because those are rare). They can be classified as “almost colorless” and your goal should be to choose accents that are as close to colorlessness as possible.

Size Fit

It is best to not choose diamond accents that are not more than 15% of the dimensions of the main diamond or centerpiece. For example, if you have a 1 carat diamond, the accent should not be more than 0.15 carats.

Types of Diamond Accents

Accent diamonds used in jewelry are divided into 4 major categories. Depending on your choice, you can choose which is the best fit for your piece.

Baguette Diamond Accent

These are rectangular-shaped step-cut diamonds. Also known as tapered baguette diamonds, they start with long sides and get more narrow towards the bottom.

They are prominently used as side stones with one baguette at each side of the larger diamond Embedding baguette accents into a thin band is fairly easy, which makes it common for jewelers to place it round rings and bracelets.

Round Diamond Accent

Classic and versatile round diamond accents can be paired with any diamond shape and can be used in any setting.

Creating a halo setting is common using round accents and they are also used in pave or channel settings.

Round accents can feature single cut (16,17, or 18 facets) and full-cut (57 to 58 facets), depending on their size, providing extra shine, sparkle, and elegance in every setting.

Trillion Diamond Accent

It is best to pair trillion diamond accents with round, brilliant, radiant or oval diamonds.

These accents feature a triangular shape and are cut just like radiant diamonds to give them radiating sparkle, often used as side stones in a three-stone setting. The rounded and pointed ends allow it to shine with princess and cushion cut diamonds as well.

Marquise Diamond Accent

This is a unique shape and you can do so much with it. It is common to create a unique chevron pattern when placed in V-shape that makes the piece of jewelry stand out.

With their symmetry, marquise diamond accents contrast wonderfully with the crisp lines of an emerald or princess cut diamond.
